It was late Sunday night and Laurie lay next to Emma in the bed of the Lake-House master bedroom. They'd driven up in the morning and spent the day unpacking. By now Laurie should be sleeping like a log. But instead she heaved a great side and turned around for what seemed like he millionth time in the half hour since they'd turned the lights off after a short and unsuccessful bout with the Times crossword.

It was a hot afternoon in July and Laurie, who'd been cooped up in her apartment writing all day had decided it was time for a picnic-style lunch so wearing a yellow camisole and a knee-length jeansskirt she was now on the way to her favourite deli, just round the corner from her apartment building. The plan was to pick a little something up there and then head over to central park to eat it.
It would have been nice to meat up with Emma or even just a friend for lunch. But it was Thursday, which meant Emma was busy all day and all their other friends who were usually in the city had fled New York for the Summer. In fact Laurie planned on doing the very same thing after the weekend but for now she enjoyed the solitude.
Then as if to contradict her her phone started beeping in the bag. After going through the entire contents of the bag (a book, her wallet and keys, some aspirin just in case someone had a headache, her journal, some napkins a few pens and some other bits and pieces) she finally got a hold of the phone. Putting it to her ear with out checking the caller-id she answered:
"Laurie Harper speaking."
